Chile to create huge marine conservation park around Easter Island
The President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, announced on Monday that Chile would be creating a massive conservation park - one of the world’s largest - in the ocean around Easter Island (Rapa Nui) to protect fish populations and other marine species.
‘This is Chile's contribution to the ocean, so that our children and grandchildren may enjoy what we are doing here,’ Bachelet said during the ‘Our Ocean’ conference being held in Vina del Mar. Another park will protect the islands chains including the Juan Fernandez archipelago. Together the parks will form around one million sq km of protected ocean. Read more: reuters.com
