Long known for its music scene, "Keep Austin weird" aesthetic, and inventive culinary talents, Austin is sure to have something for everyone. But when's the best time to visit?

A vibrant festival scene and mild winters make Austin a great year-round choice for travelers. But Austin can get sweltering during summer, just when the city's most unique experiences land on the calendar. Here's our guide on when to visit.

Summer

Best time for seeing the Congress Ave Bridge bats and chilling at Barton Springs

The summer months of June, July and August are technically high season, when schools are out and families travel, but temperatures are blazingly hot (average highs of 95℉ in June and July). It's prime time to cool off in places like Barton Springs Pool, a chilly natural-spring pool lined with century-old pecan trees.

August is the best time to witness the bat colony under Congress Avenue Bridge. Each year, North America's largest colony of Mexican free-tailed bats (about 1.5 million) nest on the platform underneath the bridge. As the sun sets, the bats make their nightly foray into the sky in great columns over the Colorado River. Popular viewing points include Congress Ave Bridge or on the grassy banks of Lady Bird Lake.

Spring and fall

Best time for seeing wildflowers and attending festivals

In spring, wildflowers and mild weather make this the perfect time of year to visit. Austin doesn't necessarily explode with autumn colors (with the exception of a few parks), but September sees a break from the hot temperatures of summer. Festivals in the spring and fall are at the center of Austin social life. Major events, like SXSW (May) and Austin City Limits (October), usually land around this time.

April is the heart of wildflower season in the nearby Hill Country. Consider making a day trip outside of town to witness the fields of bluebonnets carpeting the hills. Closer to town, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center will scratch the wildflower itch. The center hosts the National Wildflower Week in May.

Winter

Best time for finding a deal on accommodation and getting into the holiday spirit

Although rarely "cold," Austin does see chilly temperatures (lows in the low 40s) during the winter. Not one to let the weather get in the way of a good time, Austin continues it's annual roll with holiday markets and bazaars and other seasonal events. If you want to chase away a chill, winter is a great time to heat up the dance floor at one of Austin's top music venues and honky-tonks, like the Broken Spoke.

Although accommodation prices generally stay consistent year-round, winter is your best chance at landing good discounts on hotel rates.

February

Temperatures can be chilly, ranging form the mid-forties to low 60s, and you might see some rain. On the bright side? Tourism is light and good hotel deals are common.

March

As temperatures warm, folks look to get outside and to reconnect over music, food and fun. Numerous festivals oblige. A few wildflowers start to bloom, with bluebonnets beginning to peak in mid-March.

April

It's time to head to the Hill Country for a wildflower drive, with bluebonnets blooming through mid-April. The city festival season is in full swing, with a range of niche and small celebrations filling the calendar.

July

On July 4th a grand fireworks display over Lady Bird Lake celebrates the nation's independence.

August

Temperatures may be in the 90s, but what's a little heat to an Austinite? The festival season just wont call it quits. And post-party, you can always take a dip in the cool spring-fed pool.

September

Summer vacationing comes to an end on Labor Day, but festival season continues in the warm weather. And in Austin it can remain downright hot with high temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s at the start of fall.

October

Look for costume contests and spooky merriment at bars across town as Halloween approaches at the end of the month.

The best time to go to Austin

Quintana Roo in Mexico, home to popular spring break destinations like Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, has loosened its COVID-19 restrictions. Mexico uses a four-color epidemiological traffic light system that ranges from red to green, and the state has just moved from orange to yellow - the second least restrictive scenario.

This represents more opportunities for the gradual reactivation of activities, with beaches and public parks being able to operate at 60% capacity - up from 30% during the orange phase. Hotels, restaurants, historic sites, theaters, cinemas, theme parks, golf courses and tourist services are now open at 60% capacity. Gymnasiums and sports clubs are permitted to operate at 70% in outdoor areas, and 50% in closed spaces.

Cancún is a popular spring break destination, due to its aquamarine Caribbean waters and powdery white-sand beaches. While its land border with the US remains closed, aside for essential travel reasons, Mexico is open to travelers - though the CDC currently advises against all but essential travel to Mexico. Regions in the US that are popular for spring break travel, such as Florida, are also preparing for the traditionally busy travel period and how travel might impact the spread of COVID-19.

Travelers who go to Mexico are required to complete a health declaration form and scan the QR code it generates on arrival, but are not required to provide a negative PCR test or quarantine on arrival. However, they will need to be tested before returning to the US. The city's “Slow-vannah” moniker really rings true in the beginning of the year – it's the off-season, but winter weather is typically mild so visits to downtown attractions are still doable.

When to visit Savannah 

Portland is blessed with a pretty prime geographic location – drive two hours in any direction and you might find yourself at the coast, on a snow-capped stratovolcano, in the heart of wine country, at a rock climbing crag, soaking in a hot spring or even closing in on other major cities like Seattle, Washington. If you're itching for a change of scenery, Portland has a wealth of day trip-worthy destinations in arm's reach. We narrowed it down to sixteen of the best, with a little something for everyone from foodies to families to outdoor enthusiasts to oenophiles.

1. Waterfall Alley, Columbia River Gorge

Steep, evergreen-covered cliffs are striated with so many high, lush waterfalls that it boggles the mind. Walk into this temperate rainforest and you’ll find golden-red foliage in fall, snow sprinkles in winter, wildflowers in spring and flourishing mosses year-round. The lower edge is dominated by the mighty, curving Columbia River. Adventures in Columbia River Gorge range from easy jaunts from a parking lot to full days exploring the wilds.

How to get to the Gorge: I-84 East runs the length of the Gorge, and you can easily exit to stop in numerous small towns and trail head parking lots along the way. Traffic can get backed up, though, so give yourself plenty of time. Alternately, you can reach the Gorge by public transit if you take the bus or light rail to the Gateway/NE 99th Avenue Transit Center and transfer to the Columbia Gorge Express.

2. Willamette Valley Wine Country

The New World’s answer to Burgundy, the bucolic Willamette Valley excels at producing complex pinot noirs. Small towns chock-full of gourmet restaurants and cute shops are separated by rolling hills covered in grapevines and flowers. Most wineries are family-owned and you’re more likely to be met by a happy dog than an attitude. Beyond wine, check out distilleries, cheese factories, bike trails and more.

How to get to the Willamette Valley: Towns like Dundee at the north end of the Willamette Valley are only 40 minutes or so from downtown Portland, but the Willamette Valley extends for about a hundred miles to Eugene at the far southern end.

3. Sauvie Island

With pick-your-own fruit farms in summer, corn mazes and hay rides come autumn, and beaches, trails and waterways to explore year-round, Sauvie Island is an easy trip to pastoral bliss. Plus, it’s as fun for kids as it is for adults. As the largest island in Columbia River, any land not dedicated to farming is a protected wildlife area. Expect to see ospreys, herons, bald eagles and maybe even a beaver.

How to get to Sauvie Island: Sauvie Island is just 40min from Portland by car and can be reached by US-30 East, I-5 South, or US-26 East. There will be plenty of parking at the farms and other destinations, as well as at the public beaches – just be sure to get there early if it's a sunny summer day.

4. Silver Falls State Park

Silver Falls is quite possibly the most stunning park in the state. The 7.2-mile, not-to-miss Trail of Ten Falls does what it says and more as it winds up a basalt canyon through thick forests. Walk the full loop to see all the waterfalls – and even walk behind a few – in their fern-draped, wildflowered splendor, or park at the Silver Falls Lodge from where it’s a short walk down to South Falls – here the trail leads underneath an unforgettable 177ft cascade curtain.

How to get to Silver Falls State Park: Silver Falls State Park is about 26 miles east of Salem on Hwy 214 and 53 miles south of Portland via OR-214 N and I-5 N. It should only take an hour to reach from downtown, depending on traffic.

5. Cannon Beach

The Oregon Coast holds some of the most beautifully grand but lesser-known beaches in the contiguous USA. Cannon Beach is the ideal, easy-to-reach introduction to the region, with miles of white sand, waterfalls tumbling to the beach and the hulking, 72m Haystack Rock which makes for a picture-perfect silhouette. In town, you’ll find art galleries, chic boutiques and incredible dining (hint: try the chowder).

How to get to Cannon Beach: Take US-26 East until it junctions with US 101 – a trip that should be only 1hr 30min by car.

6. Timberline Lodge

Stay, dine, hike, ski or gawk – this iconic Oregon lodge is a destination in itself or a must-stop if you’re exploring Mt Hood. The grand structure was built of local stone and timber to blend in with the surrounding forest and the six-sided central tower is meant to mimic the pyramid-like peak of its glorious mountain location. Timberline Lodge is a National Historic Landmark as well as a hotel, a fine restaurant, a pub, a ski resort and a trailhead for adventurous hiking. You may recognize the exterior from the 1980s horror film, The Shining.

How to get to Timberline Lodge: Mount Hood is only an hour and a half from Portland by US-26 East. Alternately, you can take public transit to the Gresham Transit Center and transfer to the Sandy Local / Gresham Express to Sandy, Oregon. From there you transfer the Mount Hood Express before getting off in Timberline, but it will extend your journey to about three hours.

7. Johnston Ridge Observatory, Mt St Helens

Gaze into the awesome crater of Mt St Helens from the state-of-the-art Johnston Ridge Observatory. Whether this is your destination or you’re preparing for a longer hike through the National Volcanic Monument, you’ll learn the science behind the 1500 atomic bomb-force eruption in 1980. Then take the 1-mile Eruption Trail walking loop for even more views, with explanations, of the volcanic destruction.

How to get to Johnston Ridge Observatory: Take I-5 N to WA-504 E/Mt St Helens Way NE in Castle Rock. The drive is about two hours long.

8. Smith Rock

Best known for its glorious rock climbing, Smith Rock State Park boasts rust-colored 800ft cliffs that tower over the pretty Crooked River. Nonclimbers have several miles of fine hiking trails, some of which involve a little simple rock scrambling. Nearby Terrebonne has a climbing store, along with some restaurants and grocery stores. The formations in the park are simply spectacular.

How to get to Smith Rock: It's a three hour drive to Smith Rock from Portland via US-26 East. Be sure to get there early – Smith Rock quickly fills up on a sunny day. There's camping right next to the park, or at Skull Hollow (no water; campsites $5), 8 miles east. The nearest motels are a few miles south in Redmond.

9. The Fruit Loop

Covering 35 miles along scenic fertile lands, the Hood River County Fruit Loop takes you by family fruit stands, U-pick orchards, lavender fields, alpaca farms and winery tasting rooms. There are blossoms in spring, berries in summer, and apples and pears in fall – with plenty of festivals and celebrations throughout the seasons (except for winter). How to get to the Fruit Loop: State Highway 35 runs from Government Camp on the slopes of Mount Hood and the city of Hood River in the Columbia River Gorge. It's along this stretch that most of the farms and other destinations on the Fruit Loop are located. You can take either US-26 East or I-84 to reach one end of the Loop or the other, depending on whether you'd like to drive it clockwise or counterclockwise.

10. Eugene, Oregon

Eugene offers a great art scene, exceptionally fine restaurants, buzzy breweries, boisterous festivals, miles of riverside paths and several lovely parks. Its location at the confluence of the Willamette and McKenzie Rivers, just west of the Cascades, means there's plenty of outdoor recreation on offer – especially around the McKenzie River region, the Three Sisters Wilderness and Willamette Pass. Not only that, Eugene's at the southern end of the Willamette Valley, which boasts several world-class wineries.

How to get to Eugene: It's about a two hour drive on I-5 South from Portland to Eugene. If you don't mind the potential for delays, or want to extend your daytrip into a weekend away, you can also take Amtrak's Coast Starlight or Cascades lines from Portland's Union Station to Eugene, a journey of about 2 hours and 30 minutes if you don't have to wait on a freight train to pass.

11. Tillamook

Best known for its huge cheese industry, Tillamook is a fun destination for a day trip if you're aiming to down some dairy. Cheese production began in Tillamook in the 1890s, when an English cheesemaker brought his cheddar-making techniques to the fledgling dairies along Tillamook Bay. Nearly a million people stop here annually to visit the famed Tillamook Creamery, which produces 171,000 pounds of cheese every day. South of Tillamook, US 101 loses the beaches and headlands and follows the Nestucca River through pastureland and logged-off mountains. The slower but prettier Three Capes Scenic Drive begins in Tillamook and follows the coast.

How to get to Tillamook: US-26 West and OR-6 West will get you to Tillamook in under an hour and a half. Alternately, you can take the 5 bus from Union and disembark at the Tillamook Transit Center, but that will add a half hour or so to the trip.

12. Bend, Oregon

Not all of Bend is as pretty as nearby Smith Rock – Hight 97 (3rd St) is a long commercial strip of cheap motels, fast-food restaurants and run-of-the-mill services. But something has to support Bend's fast-growing population, which has skyrocketed with outdoor-lovers over the past decade or so. You can ski fine powder in the morning, paddle a kayak in the afternoon and grab a beer in the evening at a crop of local watering holes. Or would you rather go mountain biking, hiking, mountaineering, stand-up paddle boarding, fly-fishing or rock climbing? All of those are possible at the nearby Three Sisters Wilderness, Lava River Cave and Newberry National Volcanic Monument. You can even surf a river wave in the center of town. It's the perfect getaway from cloudy Portland, too, with nearly 300 days of sunshine each year.

How to get to Bend: US-26 East will get you to Bend from Portland in just over three hours, though traffic can sometimes tangle up where you pass through Smith Rock State Park. You can also take I-5 South to Salem and take OR-22 East over the Cascades to Bend – a drive of about three and a half hours.

13. Bagby Hotsprings

A 90-mile drive east of Salem is this rustic, clothing-optional hot spring with various wooden tubs in semi-private bathhouses. Bagby Hot Springs is accessible via a lovely 1.5-mile hiking trail through lush forest. Be prepared to wait your turn on weekends. The admission fee is collected by an attendant near the trailhead.

How to get to Bagby Hotsprings: There are a couple different routes you can take south from Portland that all converge around Shady Dell. Whichever you take, you'll ultimately end up driving 11 miles on forest service road NF-7010 until you reach the trailhead parking lot. From there it's a 30 minute hike to the springs.

14. Trillium Lake

If there's one thing Portlanders love, it's heading to Trillium Lake for the day. This popular spot offers stunning vistas of Mt. Hood reflected in the lake's shimmering waters, a nice campground, and boardwalk hikes surrounded by wildflowers in season. During the spring and summer, there are opportunities for boating, swimming and fishing, too. The 63-acre lake sits at an elevation of 3,600 feet, though, so by the middle of autumn the access road is closed by the park service, and instead transforms into a cross country ski and snowshoe trail for the winter. A State of Oregon Sno-Park permit is required November 1 through April 30.

How to get to Trillium Lake: US-26 East will get you to Trillium Lake in about an hour and a half. Once you reach Government Camp, you'll use forest service road NF-2656 to reach the campground.

15. Astoria

Named after America's first millionaire, John Jacob Astor, Astoria sits at the 5-mile-wide mouth of the Columbia River and was the first US settlement west of the Mississippi. The city has a long seafaring history and has seen its old harbor, once home to poor artists and writers, attract fancy hotels and restaurants in recent years. Inland are many historical houses, including lovingly restored Victorians – a few converted into romantic B&Bs. With a number of quirky festivals like the Fisher Poets Gathering and the Festival of the Dark Arts beer showcase, Astoria has plenty to keep day trippers coming back throughout the year.

How to get to Astoria: It takes just under two hours to get to Astoria from Portland on US-26 West. Alternately, you can take public transit to Union and transfer to the CC bus to Astoria before getting off at the East Columbia River Highway stop. It takes just under three hours by bus from Portland.

16. Seattle

Just three hours away from Portland, its bigger, sleeker sibling sits on Puget Sound. Seattle 's current reputation as the town that spawned Amazon and Starbucks won't give you the full picture of the city's oddball cultural heritage. Crisscross its urban grid and you’ll find all kinds of apparitions: a rocket sticking out of a building; a museum built to resemble a smashed-up electric guitar; glass orbs in wooden canoes; a statue of Lenin; a mural made of used chewing gum; fish-tossing market traders; and a museum dedicated to antique pinball machines (that you can still play). How to get to Seattle: It's under three hours to Seattle from Portland on I-5 North. You can also take the Bolt bus, which departs regularly from the Park Blocks in downtown Portland. Another option is to take the Amtrak Coast Starlight or Cascade train from Portland's Union Station in to Seattle. The later two options will take anywhere from three and a half to four and a half hours, not counting possible delays.

Travelers entering Vermont are permitted to bypass quarantine as long as at least 14 days have passed since they were fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Those arriving by plane, train or bus who are not vaccinated must quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in the New England state. If they have not had any symptoms of COVID-19, travelers have the option to obtain a PCR test on or after the seventh day of quarantine. They can end their quarantine with a negative test result, but must continue to monitor themselves for symptoms for the full 14 days.

There is an option to quarantine in your own home state before traveling to Vermont. Visitors arriving by car or private plane have the option to quarantine at home and then drive directly there, or else they must quarantine in Vermont after they arrive. They can complete a 14-day quarantine or a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative PCR test in their home state and enter Vermont without further travel-related quarantine restrictions.

Travelers who stop en route to Vermont are asked to wear a face mask, stay at least six feet away from people they don't live with, avoid crowded indoor spaces and wash their hands often. Those who have completed quarantine are not permitted to gather with another household in Vermont.

Vermont has suspended all social gatherings between multiple households, and says that travelers may not stay with a Vermont host or in a lodging establishment or short-term rental with another household. A vaccinated individual or household may stay with a single non-vaccinated household, and individuals who live alone may gather with members of their immediate family residing in a different household. Best time for cherry blossoms

Cherry-blossom season (late March to early April), Golden Week (early May) and O-Bon (mid-August) are peak travel periods, when sights will be crowded and accommodation more expensive (and often fully booked). June and July will kick off the hiking season in the Japan Alps, making it a great time to explore the great outdoors – and perfect for anyone looking to escape the cities in the summer heat. Autumn foliage draws crowds during specific periods in October and November (depending on elevation).

Low Season: December to March

Best time for snow

Sights are uncrowded and accommodation at its cheapest. The exception is the ski resorts, which are now hitting their stride. Many businesses close over the New Year period (end of December to early January)

January

Japan comes to life again after the lull of the New Year holiday. Winter grips the country in the mountains and in the north, ushering in ski season (take care when driving in snow country).

February

February is the coldest month and the peak of Japan's ski season.

March

Spring begins in fits and starts. The Japanese have a saying: sankan-shion – three days cold, four days warm.

April

Warmer weather and blooming cherry trees make this a fantastic month to be in Japan, though places like Kyoto can get very crowded.

May

May is one of the best months to visit: it's warm and sunny in most places and the fresh green in the mountains is beautiful. Be wary of the travel crush during the Golden Week holiday.

June

Early June is lovely, though by the end of the month tsuyu (the rainy season) sets in. As mountain snow melts, hiking season begins in the Japan Alps (though double-check for higher elevations).

July

When the rainy season passes, suddenly it’s summer – the season for festivals and hanabi taikai (fireworks shows). It does get very hot and humid; head to Hokkaidō or the Japan Alps to escape the heat.

August

Hot, humid weather and festivals continuing apace. School holidays mean beaches and cooler mountain areas get crowded. Many Japanese return to their home towns (or take a holiday) around O-Bon, so transit is hectic and shops may close.

September

Days are still warm, hot even, though less humid. Though the odd typhoon rolls through this time of year, this is generally a great time to travel in Japan.

October

Pleasantly warm days and cool evenings make this an excellent time to be in Japan. The autumn foliage peaks in the Japan Alps at this time.

November

Crisp and cool days with snow starting to fall in the mountains. Autumn foliage peaks in and around Tokyo and Kyoto, which can draw crowds.

December

December is cold across most of Japan. Year-end parties fill city bars and restaurants; commercial strips are decorated with seasonal illuminations. Many businesses shut down from 29 or 30 December to between 3 and 6 January.

The best time to go to Japan 

Always on the pulse of the latest trends, super-hip Seoul is constantly changing, and the same can be said for its climate. Visit the capital of South Korea in winter and you’ll find locals pirouetting on ice rinks, while in summer, crowds beat the sweltering heat by splashing in outdoor pools along the Han River. Squashed between the two, spring and autumn bring crisp mornings perfect for shopping and sightseeing.

Whether you’re hoping to take in one of the city’s top festivals, hit the hiking trails or just avoid the tourist crowds, here’s our guide to the best time to visit Seoul.

High season: Jun-September

Best time for outdoor attractions

Seoul’s busiest tourist period coincides with its hot summer and rainy season. A good time to visit for travellers who like the heat and don’t mind spending a few hours indoors during downpours. It’s not a great time for hikers. Accommodation prices are high as hotels get busy.

Shoulder season: April-May, October-November

Best time for hiking

Generally the best time to be in the city with pleasant weather and less crowds than summer. Hiking on the trails surrounding the city is also at an optimum in spring and autumn, especially as the foliage turns colour. Autumn sees a number of big events take place in the city including the Seoul International Fireworks Festival.

Low season: December-March

Best time to avoid the crowds

Perfect for travellers who enjoy wintry scenes, low crowds and low prices (less demand for hotels mean rate drops). Teahouses and spa sessions are the order of the day during Seoul’s winter period, with outdoor temperatures regularly dropping below freezing in December and January. This is the best time to visit for skiers.

January

Wrap up well for a visit to Seoul in January, as temperatures can slide to below -10°C (14°F). As a consequence, it’s not a popular month to visit the city. The exception is keen skiers and snowboarders, with the start of the year primetime for nearby ski resorts, including Bears Town, which is roughly two and a half hours from the city by public transport.

February

During February the city tends to empty out as locals visit hometowns to honour ancestors and eat traditional foods during Seollal (Lunar New Year). That said, there are celebratory events held in Seoul at the major palaces and folk villages, for those able to withstand the cold. (It’s worth noting Seollal can also fall in January.)

March

March remains chilly, leaving tourist crowds very thin on the ground. As a result it’s a great month for travellers looking to enjoy some of Seoul’s indoor cultural highlights, including the Leeum Samsung Museum of Art and National Museum of Korea, without the usual queues.

April

The mercury starts to rise in April as spring arrives – marking one of the best times to visit the city. Nature determines the exact timing, but early April is generally when parts of Seoul turn pink in a transient flurry of delicate cherry blossoms, best viewed from Yeouido Park (which has its own cherry blossom festival) or atop Namsan mountain. Festival Bom also comes to town in April, a city-wide celebration of the arts with dramatic dance, music and theatrical performances.

May

Buddha’s birthday brings a kaleidoscope of light and colour, as rows of delicate paper lanterns, lit at dusk, are strung along the main thoroughfares and in temple courtyards. The first Sunday of the month also sees the Jongmyo Daeje ceremony, featuring a costumed parade that winds through the city’s streets. Seoul’s night markets also begin in earnest in May.

June

The hot weather and period before the rains of July mean this is a great time to enjoy Seoul’s outdoors. It’s also a colourful time to be in the city, with the Seoul Queer Culture Festival, which includes an exhuberant street party, and Dano Festival, that sees vibrant displays of shamanist rituals and masked dances take place at the Namsangol Hanok Village and the National Folk Museum of Korea.

July

Pack heavy-duty rain gear and waterproof shoes, as this is when Seoul experiences a month of monsoon-like rains. Respite from the rain, however, is on offer at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan). Held just outside Seoul, the event is a feast of the best in sci-fi, fantasy and horror.

August

The rain abates and is replaced by sweltering humidity. Cool off in Seoul’s parks and public areas: there are free outdoor concerts most nights in Seoul Plaza and many free cultural events held in the parks along the Han River. The Seoul Fringe Festival, one of Seoul’s best performing-arts festivals, also takes place in August in the Hongdae area.

September

September is a good month to be in the city, with fine weather and some fascinating festivals to take in. Sajik Daeje (‘Great Rite for the Gods of Earth and Agriculture’) sees a procession honouring the ancient gods of the land weave through the city, with traditional costumes and music performances. The coming of major three-day holiday Chuseok (The Harvest Moon Festival), meanwhile, leads to families gathering together to eat crescent-shaped rice cakes and visit the graves of ancestors.

October

Autumn is a great time to visit Seoul, particularly if you like hiking, with temperatures good for rambling and the mountain scenery ablaze in wonderful shades of yellow, copper and orange. While the city’s foliage puts on a colourful display, there’s also a vibrant spectacle in the skies, as the Seoul International Fireworks Festival takes centre stage, with dazzling displays put on by both Korean and international teams.

November

Temperatures start to drop in November, making it a quiet month to visit. The Seoul Lantern Festival, however, provides a light in the – increasingly – dark evenings, with the stream-park Cheong-gye-cheon illuminated by gigantic, fantastic lanterns made by master craftsmen.

December

By December winter has firmly taken hold and temperatures drop to freezing, with potential dustings of snow. It’s by no means the most popular time to visit, but the city boasts a wealth of activities perfect for the winter months, such as ice skating rinks, cosy teahouses and Jjimjilbangs (public bath houses).

When to go to Seoul

If you’ve checked out the digital nomad lifestyle online, you may imagine that young remote workers are escaping to Europe, or constantly hanging out in o n the beach in Bali. But perhaps US$10,000 might convince them to settle down for a bit in an unlikely spot: Tulsa, Oklahoma.

As part of its aim of building a community of remote workers, Tulsa has announced a new homeownership initiative that will offer selected workers $10,000 towards the purchase of a home. The Oklahoma city is also offering those who move there social and networking opportunities, group activities, connections to local volunteering, civic engagement opportunities and more. The Tulsa Remote program previously offered $10,000 grants that provided $2500 towards relocation costs, then a $500 per month stipend and $1500 at the end of the 12-month program. Now, the money is available up front for those who want to put the money towards a home.

To be eligible for the program, individuals must be a permanent resident of the US and currently living outside Oklahoma. They must show consistent income, have the ability to work remotely and commit to moving to and living in Tulsa for at least one year. They will be offered space at a co-working community, whch will allow them to collaborate with other local entrepreneurs, remote workers and digital nomads.

Tulsa is home to scores of energy companies, and it has a richly detailed art deco downtown. It has a clutch of Route 66 sights and businesses, plus a lively music scene. The initiative is being organised by Tulsa Remote, a program developed by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, and the city and various community organizations are lending their support to ensure program members are fully immersed and engaged in the community.

Tulsa has a median home price of $157,000 and those who choose to purchase one may be eligible to receive $10,000 towards the purchase. The program also offers virtual and in-person visits for members to get acquainted with neighborhoods, amenities and locations that will fit their lifestyle, including a $500 travel reimbursement. Airbnb is also partnering with Tulsa Remote to help members “try before they buy,” with a $150 Airbnb coupon for a stay in the Tulsa neighborhood of their choice. Wondering what may draw people to Tulsa? The city has a high quality of life and a comparatively low cost of living, according to Mayor G.T. Bynum. It’s also centrally-located in the country, is ranked as one of the most affordable cities to live in, and will keep locals busy with new museums, bars and restaurants.

High season: April to August

Best time for festivals and events

High season in Prague generally means April to June (plus the Christmas and New Year holidays), but visitor numbers still swell in July and August when the temperatures are at their warmest. But be warned: even in summer, the Prague weather can be fickle, with thunderstorms and cool spells commonplace.

From April, any of the sights that went dark during the winter months start to reopen and by the time the Prague Spring festival kicks off in May, everything is up and running and many of the best hotels are fully booked.

Spring in the Czech Republic is mid-March until mid-June and this is when Prague comes to life with some of its best events, including the Prague Food Festival and the much revered Czech Beer Festival.

Shoulder season: September and October

Best time to visit Prague

September and October are the best months to visit Prague — but pack a light trench jacket and small umbrella in preparation for the odd rain shower. This is when the crowds begin to thin out, the school trips suddenly end, and parts of the cities are slowly reclaimed by the locals.

As the days get shorter, the opening hours of museums are cut and the concerts are less frequent, but almost everything remains open. Many of the best restaurants – those where booking is usually essential – suddenly have some availability.

It’s also a great time to try a local delicacy, burčak. For about three weeks each year, from the end of September to mid-October, you will see shops, street stalls and wine bars like Cellarius selling this traditional ‘young wine’. Freshly extracted in the early stages of fermentation, it’s a sweet wine worth sampling if you’re in the city.

Low season: November to March

Best time for budget travelers

Aside from Christmas and New Year, when Prague has one last blow-out and accommodation usually fills up again, hotel rates can drop by 30% or 40% during low season. Use the money you save on a bed to buy a warm coat, hat and gloves to ward off winter’s sub-zero temperatures. You’ll also need footwear that can cope with snow and ice.

A few of the sights hibernate during this time: Troja Chateau closes between November and March and the Museum of Public Transport shuts its doors for December. The river cruises shut down for the winter. The rowing boats and pedalos available from Slav Island are packed away too. Even Stag Moat and Royal Garden at Prague Castle close to the public.

January

Days are short – the sun sets around 4.30pm in mid-January – but post–New Year accommodation prices are the cheapest you’ll find, ideal for that romantic getaway in a cozy hotel with an open fireplace.

February

The frost can be cruel in February, with temperatures below -10°C, so wrap up well. But Prague looks mighty pretty in the snow.

March

The first buds of spring begin to green Prague’s parks and gardens, and the Easter holidays bring Easter markets, hand-painted Easter eggs, and the first tourist influx of the year.

April

The weather transforms from shivers to sunshine. By the end of the month, the sidewalks and squares are covered with outdoor cafe tables, and peak tourist season begins.

May

May is Prague's busiest and most beautiful month, with trees and gardens in full blossom, and a string of major festivals. Book accommodation well in advance, and expect to pay top dollar.

June

Something of a shoulder season, June promises great weather for beer gardens and river cruises without the May festival crowds or the hordes of students who descend on the city in July and August.

July

Prague swelters in summer, so pack some lightweight clothes and opt for accommodation with air-conditioning.

September

The hot and humid summer weather mellows out as September approaches, and the hordes of visiting backpackers, students and school groups thin out, making this a great month to visit.

October

Autumn is one of the most pleasant times of the year in Prague – the tourist crowds start to diminish, it's still pleasantly warm, and the Strings of Autumn festival is less frenetic than the Prague Spring.

November

It starts to get chillier in November just as the seasonal sights close until spring. There are fewer people around, but there can be some wonderful, bright days and relaxed, tourist-free streets.

December

Cold and dark it may be, but a warming glass of svařák (mulled wine) will set you up to enjoy the city’s Christmas markets and New Year celebrations. Expect peak season hotel prices.
