Catania cancels fireworks show out of respect for dead migrants

The Sicilian city of Catania has cancelled its annual fireworks show out of respect for the 49 migrants who died from inhaling fuel fumes inside the hold of an overcrowded fishing boat on Saturday.

A boat carrying the 49 bodies, as well as 313 other migrants who were on the same boat, including the widows of many of the dead, arrived in Catania on Monday. More than 2300 migrants have died at sea and about 103,000 rescued migrants have reached Italy so far this year. Instead of the fireworks display the city will release one white balloon for each of the 49 latest victims. Read more: theguardian.com
