Canary Islands storms cause crazy water phenomenon

Spain’s Canary Islands have been put on alert with severe weather warnings that caused an unusual water spout phenomenon over a popular beach on Friday.

The water spout was spotted just off the beach at Playa del Ingles on Gran Canaria. Some tourists mistook the phenomena for a tornado, but the display was actually created by storm clouds connecting to water to form what news reports described as an ‘intense columnar cortex’. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, in the east of the archipelago, are expected to be worst hit by the storms, which have led to the closure of all schools on the Canaries. Read more:
