California recreation park could double in size
The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is already a much-loved chunk of protected parkland northwest of Los Angeles , and now the government is planning on doubling the Area’s size.
The scheme would extend the protected area north and also incorporate other, already-existing green spaces including the hugely popular Griffith Park with its observatory, Hollywood sign and views across the city. If approved by Congress, the vast area will include trails, archaeological sites and biologically sensitive zones, providing ‘new recreational opportunities for one of the most densely populated areas in the United States’.
