The British breakfast staple black pudding has had a profile boost after it was hailed as a ‘superfood’.
The blood sausage, which is also popular in Spain, is rich in protein, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc and low in carbohydrates. Some shops are already reporting a rise in the dish’s popularity, with Charles Macleod Butchers in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, in Scotland’s Western Isles, seeing an eightfold rise in mail orders. Black pudding joins items like seaweed, black beans, avocado oil and birch water on the list from a health food website, although many scientists say that the term ‘superfoods’ is misleading.
