Beijing has issued an ‘orange’ alert for air pollution, the second-highest on the warning scale. Air levels reached ‘hazardous’ levels on Thursday and around 20 highways were closed to try to help alleviate the smog. The public was warned to limit outdoor activities as much as possible. Beijing frequently suffers from air pollution problems due to an increased use of cars as well as regional weather patterns that blow sandstorms into the area in autumn and winter.
