Unique new hotel compound in Beijing marries the old with the new
A brand new hotel compound has opened in Beijing this month that sees a number of buildings from the 1950’s being married with a variety of architectural styles and modern ornamentation to create a distinctive property that marries the old and the new.
Located in the Hutong district of Houhai, the Vue Hotel compound sits on the edge of the Houhai Lake and neighbours a public park. Featuring 80 rooms and suites, a bakery café, a warehouse restaurant and a rooftop bar, the property took two-and-a-half years to design and build. Conceived by the Orange Hotels Group, the Beijing hotel is the flagship property in a project that seeks to expand to a number of cities across China.
Comprising of a series of buildings designed primarily in the Chinese vernacular, the assortment of structures differ in their finishes, featuring decorative roof eaves, gargoyles, sculptured balconies, latticed window frames that can be seen amongst plain brick finishes and newer builds. All of the buildings are painted in a dark charcoal grey, with certain details being highlighted with gold patina. The compound is designed in such a way so that guests exploring the area can see the distinction between the historical and the contemporary, and the spaces in-between each building are decorated with an “ice-ray” lattice pattern inspired by traditional Chinese screens.
The overall vision for the collection of Vue properties is that each one can take design inspiration from the culture and environment of its location. The Beijing property draws on the nearby lake and its animal inhabitants, with art installations featuring foxes, rabbits and deer dotted throughout the compound and in rooms. Two gigantic wireframe rabbits can also be seen on top of the Pink Rabbit restaurant located in the warehouse space on the site, while the rooftop Moon Bar includes a Jacuzzi pool with views of the surrounding area.
