Beijing closes main nightlife district ahead of war commemoration events

Police in Beijing have instituted martial law in the city's main nightlife district, Sanlitun, ahead of a military parade to be held in the city on 3 September. Shops, restaurants and bars will close over the weekend in Taikoo Li South and Courtyard Four.

The closures will last from 3pm, 22 August until 2pm, 23 August. This comes as Beijing prepares for events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of the Sino-Japanese War. The city has also closed several of its main sightseeing districts, including Tian'anmen Square, and all airports will be shut during the events on 3 September. Read more:
