This sleeping beach bed has just scooped an innovative tourism award
The Germans have always shown their ingenuity in getting the best places at beaches and pools. Now they’ve gone one better by designing their own bed for the seaside. The beach-sleeping baskets - known as Schlafstrandkörbe - have won a major tourist award for its creator Mensch Foundation in Schleswig-Holstein.
It came out tops for “the best touristic innovation” at the recent German Tourism Awards, reports broadcaster NDR. Part of the criteria used in the awards was to assess future profitability, possible environmental contribution and innovation.
The beachfront beds have been in use along the Baltic coast of the country this summer and are the first of their kind across the globe says the tourist office in Schleswig-Holstein. Interest in the new beach comfort design has spread as far away as China, according to a local tourism official. The bed is a sizeable asset on the beach coming in at 2.40 metres wide and 1.30 metres high. It means that two people can easily fit inside to take advantage of its bedding and pillows. They cost between €29 and €90 a night to rent and can be booked the previous evening or on the morning of a trip to the beach.
Charlotte Seipel, who hires out the basket, says that she puts put fresh linen into the basket every day, just like hotels do. Sputniknews.com says the creation is a classic beach basket during the day but can be closed and turned into a real bed at night. Each basket has its own torch and a key to the sanitary building nearby. In some instances, local hotels supply the guests with sheets and towels directly.
