In the UK? Travel influencers weigh in on how to beat Blue Monday
Today is the third Monday of January – or “Blue Monday” as it’s more commonly known, as it's considered to be the most depressing day of the year. In a bid to cheer people up by providing a ray of travel inspiration sunshine, VisitEngland – in partnership with the tourism organisations of Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and London – has teamed up with top travel influencers to create a hub of inspiring experiences that reflect 24 hours in the UK.
The group of international and British Instagrammers and bloggers travelled the length and breadth of the UK to enjoy a variety of unique experiences at every hour of the day, notching up 120 different experiences. These ranged from sipping quirky cocktails in a 1940s-inspired speakeasy in London, to coasteering in Scarborough and taking an exhilarating plane ride over the Pembrokeshire coast.
The videos will be released every hour on VisitBritain’s Facebook page, with followers encouraged to vote for their favourite “bucket list” moments from the 24-hour trips. As a taster, here are some of these mood-boosting experiences to enjoy at any hour of the day in the UK, which are sure to help put a spring in your step for the year ahead and give you inspiration for great travel experiences.
Coasteering in Scarborough
Prepare yourself for an exhilarating adventure as you swim along Scarborough’s sea cliffs, explore gullies, caves, cracks and different rock formations created by the sea – before leaping from the rock face into the waves below. Whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned pro, Scarborough Surf School offers a range of courses for various abilities – including more basic routes for families, to more demanding routes that will test the nerves with higher jumps and adrenaline-inducing climbs.
Take a ‘sea-fari’ in Oban, Scotland
Discover the breath-taking beauty of Oban’s stunning coastline aboard Seafari Adventures. Visit the world’s third-largest whirlpool, the Gulf of Corryvreckan, and spot the area’s wildlife including porpoises, dolphins, whales, eagles, seals and otters. Ride the longest tunnel slide in the world in London
At 178 metres-long, ArcelorMittal Orbit is the longest and highest tunnel slide in the world. The 40-second trip takes visitors on a circular ride around the UK’s tallest public artwork – designed by Carsten Höller – through the famous loops and curves of the iconic structure, including a tight corkscrew, ending with a 50-metre straight run back down to earth.
Take a gin jaunt in Belfast, Northern Ireland
Fans of 'Mother’s Ruin' will enjoy this tour of Belfast’s vibrant pubs and bars, sampling locally-produced gin and learning all about the history of the UK’s favourite tipple, as well as the chance to meet some of the distillers. Ride Europe’s largest zip line, Snowdonia, Wales
The largest zip zone in Europe – Zip World Titan is a series of three zip wires set up in a disused quarry. Swoop at 70 mph above sheep-dotted moorland with striking windswept views of Snowdonia mountain range, lakes and streams.
