Basque demonstrators take to the streets in human chains

Inspired by protests in Catalonia, thousands of demonstrators across Spain’s Basque Country formed human chains on Sunday in a bid to win the right to hold a referendum on regional independence.

Many protesters wore the red, white and green Basque flag as they marched through the Basque capital Vitoria, snaked past the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, through the coastal beach town of San Sebastian and further inland through towns such as Pamplona.

Spain’s Basque Country has a distinct language and culture and historically has sought greater autonomy from Spain. In 2011 the Basque terrorist group ETA agreed to a permanent ceasefire after a decades-long violent campaign for independence in the region. Read more:
