Azores tourism boosted by launch of British budget flights

The little-visited Azores islands experienced a tourism boom this spring after the launch of no-frills flights from the UK helped boost British visitor numbers.

Low-cost air carrier Ryanair has been running flights to the Portuguese archipelago since April and passenger numbers to the Azores’ main international airport jumped by a third between April and July. The direct flight from London’s Stansted airport departs every Saturday and though originally scheduled to run until October, will continue until at least March 2016. The archipelago comprises nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic, punctuated with craters, lakes, thermal pools and mountains.
