You can eat an avocado made of vegan gelato straight from a real shell in London
With their dreamy colour and amazing texture, avocados are one of the trendiest – and healthiest – food items around. Luckily, now that’s been combined with all the joys of gelato in a vegan desert that comes served in an eco-friendly avocado shell.
The Avo-lato, from Snowflake Luxury Gelato, is now available at its Selfridges boutique in London. The plant-based gelato looks just like a halved avocado and even comes served in a real shell to help reduce the waste. The Avo-lato will set you back £9.50 (€10.80), but the adorable treat is packed with filling ingredients like avocados and peanut butter.
The gluten- and preservative-free gelato is made with mixing 60% fresh avocado with a homemade grape sugar based syrup to give it a subtle sweetness. The mix is then scooped into avocado shells and when it has set, depressions are added by hand. That is filled with an “avocado stone” made with a peanut butter flavoured gelato that has flaxseed, almond, Brazil nut, walnut and more, made with soya milk.
Asad Khan, founder and CEO of Snowflake Luxury Gelato, explained in a statement that using avocado helped create a creamy texture that is suitable for vegans. “The idea of serving the Avo-lato in avocado skins came as a result of seeing so many of these beautiful shells simply being thrown away in our kitchens. As a business that is working hard to reduce wastage and materials consumption, it seemed like an obvious win”.
Snowflake Gelato has six locations around the UK, offering up more than 100 different flavours. The Selfridges location in London can be found on the city’s famous Oxford Street. If your avocado love cannot be satiated with just one dish, there are plenty of places where you can sample things like the avocado latte, the avocado bun, or even just head to a totally avocado-themed pop-up.
