This is where Aussies are going for an adventurous holiday
There’s no doubt that more and more travellers are less inclined to spend a week on the beach and are instead looking for an adventure. But where are people going to make their adventure travel dreams come true? If you’re an Australian, it’s likely that you’ve considered Vietnam.
Intrepid, an Australian travel company, released its new Adventure Travel Index, which breaks down what Aussies think counts as an adventurous holiday and where they go to take one. The company asked 1000 people across the country what makes their vacation adventurous: 43.4% said getting off the beaten path and heading to places with less mainstream tourists, 26.6% said seeing or doing something new, 22.5% said high-adrenaline activities, and 6.4% said travelling on a budget.
The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) defines adventure tourism as “a trip that includes at least two of the following three elements: physical activity, natural environment and cultural immersion,” according to the report. When it comes to why travellers want an adventurous holiday, the main reason may be surprising: about 51% say they book an adventure to recharge if they feel busy, tired or stressed – combatting the idea that the beach is the best place to relax.
When it comes to where travellers are going, Intrepid said the top spots for their customers, from 2016 to 2017, is Vietnam. With deep caves, high karsts and epic coastlines, Vietnam is not a surprising pick for travellers who love a bit of adventure. It’s followed by Peru – home to epic treks like Machu Picchu and the lesser known Choquequirao – and India, a country large enough to keep any traveller on an endless adventure. Cambodia and Morocco round out the top five.
Intrepid also notes that Iceland, Croatia and China have moved into the top 20 countries in 2017, despite Iceland and Croatia both being known for the massive influx of tourists in recent years. If you’re looking to get away from the crowds, the report also looks at the countries where locals vastly outnumber tourists, so if you want to break free from fellow travellers, find out the top spots here.
