Ash cloud causes causes further closure of Bali airport

Today Indonesian officials have announced the fourth closure of Bali International Airport due to a drifting ash cloud from Mt Raung.

J A Barata from the Transport Ministry said that the airport would only be closed for a number of hours around midday, but Jetstar and Virgin Australia have today cancelled a number of flight both in and out of Bali. Vulcanologist Gede Suantika commenting on Mt Raung’s recent activity noting that ‘The volcano normally shoots out ash 700 to 800 metres but it's around 1,000 metres today’. Thousands of tourists have been left stranded by the closure of Ngurah Rai airport which has suffered severe disruptions throughout this year’s peak holiday season. Read more:
