As Waikiki reopens after cleanup, another beach closes to be cleaned

Just a few days after a Waikiki beach was closed due to flooding that caused untreated sewage to contaminate nearby waters, a nearby beach has been temporarily closed due to a similar issue.

A million gallons of wastewater was released from a treatment plant in East Honolulu, contaminating Sandy Beach and surrounding areas. The Department of Health has advised people to avoid entering the beach until the contaminated waters can be tested for safety. A spokesperson for the treatment plant said the wastewater was filtered for large sediments and debris but had not yet been chlorinated. A short circuit caused by heavy rains is the culprit for the accidental spill, according to the treatment company. Read more:
