The National Weather Service in Nevada posted a picture to its Facebook saying that it had experience record snowfall: "A lot of places saw significant snowfall today, and we even set a new record at the Reno Airport. 7 inches of snow fell today, doubling the previous record of 3.5 inches that was set back in 1932. The storm total snow at the airport between yesterday and today was 8.4 inches."
People cool off in water during the "Escravos da Maua" block party, as part of pre-Carnival celebrations in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Sunday. Merrymakers are taking to the streets in hundreds of open-air "bloco" parties, before the start of the city's over-the-top Carnival, which officially starts the first week of February, the highlight of the year for many residents. "Escravos da Maua" translates as Slaves of Maua.
