Watch the Northern Lights from this luxury chalet on an Alaskan glacier
A new luxury chalet has been built on the Ruth Glacier in Denali National Park in Alaska that offers guests stunning panoramic views of the surrounding region, as well as the perfect conditions to watch the Aurora Borealis in private.
Created by the Sheldon family, who own private land in the area, the five-bedroom chalet is only accessible by helicopter, and aims to showcase and fully immerse visitors in the beauty of the unique natural surroundings. The chalet has been constructed on a nunatak, a rocky outcrop that has survived tens of thousands of years of churning changes. The Ruth Glacier itself extends out for miles in every direction, and above it all stands Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. The accommodation has been constructed with steel, wood and glass and is optimised for the use of renewable energy.
“Perched above an ancient river of ice and located at the only private land on Denali, the chalet offers an unparalleled and exclusive holiday redefining experience found nowhere else on earth. Located at an elevation of 5,755 feet, the property is 4.9 acres of ice and glacier-carved nunatak that legendary glacier pilot Don Sheldon claimed more than 60 years ago while mapping the Alaska Range with Brad Washburn,” Robert Sheldon told Lonely Planet Travel News.
Don Sheldon went on to build the Sheldon Mountain House in the hope of sharing a piece of Alaska with people wishing to visit, and today his family has taken up the reigns with the creation of the Sheldon Chalet nearby.
Guests staying at the chalet are greeted by their own personal staff, and have the chance to take part in specially curated adventure and leisure activities, such as trekking across the glacier itself, taking part in a special wine tasting event and spending a night in an igloo or snow cave. “Their senses begin to pick up on the geophysical events, whether they be thundering avalanches echoing across the reaches of the 35-square-mile amphitheatre, vibrant Aurora and meteor watching benefitting from our zero light pollution, or watching a weather squall come in creating ground blizzards with snow shooting up into the air around and through our grated decking,” Robert said.
Prices start at €2,300 per night person, and more information on the experience is available at the official Sheldon Mountain Chalet website.
