French accident investigators have started an inquiry into a near miss incident involving an Air France Boeing 777 and Mt Cameroon, one of Africa’s highest volcanoes. The plane, carrying 37 people on board, was on course to hit the mountain when the ground proximity warning system sounded a 'pull up' alarm. The pilots, who had switched their original course to avoid a storm, were forced to swiftly gain altitude to avoid crashing into the 4004m mountain. Read more: theguardian.com
