Academics race to save painting by Polish master
Leading academics in Kraków are urging the Polish government to step in and buy a painting by Polish master Jan Matejko, which is about to go under the hammer in Austria.
The painting, which depicts pioneering doctor Karol Gilewski, has been 'lost' since 1915, when it was last on display in Vienna. Academics say the work is of great national significance, but authorities have so far not authorised the use of public funds to purchase the piece, which has a guide price of €100,000-140,000.
