Sweden is getting its 28th Ice Hotel this winter, and here's a glimpse of what it will look like
Every year, when the cold winter weather causes the Torne River in Northern Sweden to freeze over, an Ice Hotel is built in the small village of Jukkasjärvi. Each new build includes bespoke designs created by a selection of artists from around the world, meaning that every winter brings with it a truly unique hotel, as well as an unforgettable experience for those that journey to stay there. Now in its 28th year, the plans proposed for the next Icehotel have been shared.
This year will see 28 artists from eleven different countries taking part in the creation of the Icehotel. Last April, the hotel issued a call-out for people to take part in shaping the structure, with a host of designers and artists submitting proposals and designs for the project. Those selected will now get the chance to add their individual stamps to the hotel, travelling to Jukkasjärvi for two weeks in November to December to make it happen.
The new designs include a suite with an ice leaf motif created by Nina and Johan Kauppi, a sculptural bedroom that features a large ice cloud hanging overhead by Lisa Lindqvist and a suite that includes large frozen sheets of ice draped around the central furniture designed by Marjolein Vonk and Maurizio Perron. While each year is different, the hotels usually include approximately 55 rooms divided into deluxe suites, snow rooms and family quarters.
Each Icehotel covers an area of 5500 square metres, and is built with approximately 1000 tonnes of material, which is taken directly from the Torne River. It is made from “snice”, a combination of snow and ice with an exact calculated amount of water and air, meaning that it reflects the sun’s rays, has a higher density and protects the ice inside the hotel from melting. The project also includes an Ice Church, opened every year on 25 December that is available to rent for weddings.
While each year sees a temporary Icehotel being built, visitors eager to get a taste of the experience off season have the option with Icehotel 365, a structure that is open all year round and includes a range of wintry activities.
