27 killed in stampede at Andhra Pradesh festival
A stampede at a religious festival in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has killed 27 people, most of them senior citizens.
The casualties occurred when a crowd surged out of control at the bathing ghats along the Godavari river in Rajahmundry. Stampedes at Indian festivals are alarmingly common; 32 people died in a similar stampede in Patna in 2014, and more than 500 people died in India’s worst ever stampede at the Kumbh Mela festival in 1954.
