Introduction

Accessed through the sleepy town of San Miguel, Portal San Nicolás offers the chance to explore both on land and in the water and is a good option for those who want to explore nature at their own pace and spend the night inside the park boundaries.

Alongside multitudes of carpinchos (capybaras) and caimans there are also monkeys, deer and a plethora of birdlife here. The flat terrain, lack of trees and distance from settlements mean that on clear nights the stars here are absolutely phenomenal.

San Miguel is a pleasant Guaraní-speaking rural community with sand streets and friendly locals. It's a comfortable base if you don't want to rough it in a tent in the park.
