Mar del Plata and its surrounds offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities and adventure sports.
Biking is a good way to get around town – just remember that the city is hilly! The streets of Los Troncos are relatively calm and pleasant for cycling. Rent bicycles at a classic stand: Bicicletería Madrid has been in operation on Plaza Mitre for more than six decades.
Surf is best in March or April. Visit www.mardelplata.com/tour/surf.html for more information in English on surf breaks and conditions.
As the sea lions attest, Mar del Plata is one of the best spots for fishing in Argentina. The rocky outcrop at Cabo Corrientes, just north of Playa Grande, is a good spot to try, as are the two breakwaters – Escollera Norte and Escollera Sur – at the port. Freshwater fishing is popular at Laguna de los Padres, while Mako Team offers ocean fishing excursions.
The rocky cliffs by the sea and the hills of Sierra de los Padres make for excellent climbing and rappelling. Acción Directa runs a school – it also offers mountain biking, canoeing and overnight active camping trips.
