Welcome to Los Penitentes
So named because the pinnacles resemble a line of monks, Los Penitentes has inspiring scenery and, depending on the year, often good snow cover for skiing in winter (these days, there is significantly less and less snow – the resort didn't open in 2017). Out of season, it's mostly shuttered, barren (far above the tree line) and abandoned, and somewhat resembles the hotel from the film The Shining. You can ride the lift to the peak in the summer. It’s only 165km west of Mendoza via RN 7, and so primarily visited on day trips.
In high ski season (July and August) and during peak climbing season (December through to March), it’s recommended to make reservations in advance.
