Welcome to Cholila
Tiny Cholila is a scenic blip just off RN 40 that holds a curious piece of frontier history. Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and Etta Place tried settling down and making an honest living near this quiet farming community outside the northeast entrance to Parque Nacional Los Alerces. The bandits’ tale is recounted by Bruce Chatwin in the travel classic In Patagonia. Though the threesome’s idyll only lasted a few years, their partially restored homestead still stands, just off RP 71 at Km21, 8km north of Cholila. Cholila’s enthusiastic Casa de Informes has a helpful regional map and will gladly point you in the right direction.
The mountain location is ideal for exploration. Cholila and the Río Pico area are also world-renowned fly-fishing destinations, and guided trips are available through Trekking for Trout.
