During this 5.5-hour excursion you will learn the history of the largest glacier in Argentina and its behavior over the past 10 years, during which it has shown a constant and drastic retreat. You will witness the noticeable erosion of the ice over the rocks and the visible results. You will capture extraordinary views of the glacier from different points, on a journey along natural trails. This is such an ideal excursion to share with family and friends. The tour includes Transfers from/to Puerto Bahia Tunel-El Chalten office + Sailing Viedma Lake + Trek You will sail South across the bay. The lake’s depth allows for a pleasant cruise near the shoreline, permitting the observation of the mountains Fitz Roy and Huemul. Approximately after 1-hour navigation, during which you will observe large icebergs, you will disembark on a rocky promontory area- facing the Viedma glacier- to start trekking. 

The Viedma Glacier, located within Los Glaciares National Park, in the Province of Santa Cruz, is the largest glacier in Argentina. In older times, it was believed to be the Upsala Glacier, but according to the latest studies the Viedma glacier possesses a larger surface (978 Km2) This glacier runs directly from the Southern Patagonic Ice Field up to Lake Viedma, and its front wall rises 40 meters above the lake level. Its sources are located in the heart of the Ice Field at 1,500 to 2,000 meters over sea level.The Viedma Glacier shows some dark lines on its surface, which are volcanic ash bands, blended with the ice. In the last few years, it has undergone significant retreats.Its tongue is detached from the Patagonic Ice, West from Mariano Moreno range, along the Glacial Fracture Valley located between Mount Huemul (2,677 m) and Mount Campana (2,570 m).Description: The trekking on the promontory area will allow you to appreciate the history of the glaciations, the movement of large ice blocks smoothing the rocks, and to acknowledge nature as the main modeler of the landscape that you enjoy today.
