Luang Prabang cools down at dusk and the setting sun plays off the Mekong River, offering up a different perspective to this languid town. Discover by bicycle the narrow lanes and timeless charm of French Indochinese colonial buildings, gold-gilded temples and bright white stupas.
At 16:30 meet your SpiceRoads guide at your hotel to begin the discovery of this Asian gem at night. We cycle leisurely through the old quarter as the day winds down, perhaps joining in a favorite Laotian pastime, petanque, and testing out your skills against the locals. We continue riding east, to the unique forest meditation temple Wat Phon Phao for a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding countryside. Just as the lights begin to illuminate the streets we head back towards the centre of town, called by the bells and drums heralding evening prayers, and cycle by some of the lesser visited temples of the more than 30 in the city. Each of these temples have their own distinguishing features - from colourful mosaics to gold gables to detailed stencils - and your guide will point these out to you, giving you an insight most visitors miss.We continue to pedal on small hidden alleys until we are suddenly at the edge of the night market. Take a walk through to find handicrafts and textiles before we head back to your hotel around 20:00.This tour will visit temples, which are considered a place of worship. Please wear a shirt with sleeves and shorts that cover the knees to show respect in these sacred places. Alternatively, you can bring a sarong to wrap around yourself during the temple visits.
