Wondering what's appropriate... I'd like to bring some small gifts for the hosts at my lodges, b&bs etc. I've got a box of smoked salmon (I live in the Pacific Northwest) but looking for some other ideas. Could bring some school supplies also, but not planning to actually visit schools so I don't know that it makes sense. I'd be happy to bring some if it would be helpful and I could get them in the right hands...

Also, what's expected as far as tipping? I'll be staying at a game lodge and doing…

Hello all -- Counting down to my trip... 4 days to go! I've been reading a bit about the bond notes that began to be used a couple weeks ago. Several of the people in Zim that I've been in touch with have asked for payment in cash if possible. I'll bring what I can but it makes me nervous to have stacks of dollars with me. Has the bond situation made it dicier to be an American and obviously a traveler? I can understand why people there would be tense. But am concerned if that makes me more of a…

I'm an American and will be driving my own car from South Africa to Zambia soon. I've heard bad things about Zimbabwe, in terms of fuel shortages and police harassment, and also that the border at Beitbridge is a mess now. The alternative is Botswana, which I know is fine in this regard, but I'd like to spend some time in Zimbabwe. How much hassle would it be to go through Zimbabwe? I would only plan to spend 2 or 3 nights in either country.

I am visiting Binga in June, arriving from Bulawayo and then heading on to Harare. My original plan was to get the Kariba ferry from Miblizi to Kariba but it is unlikely to run on the right dates for me so I am looking at road options.

I have received the following advice from the local representative of an aid agency I am meeting up with in Binga "..because of the bad state of repair of the back road via Karoi, this route is not advisable. It is also not secure as it will take him through a…

I've checked out a couple of African news sites and am very interested in the events and developments there. Any suggestions of news resources that are especially good? Also, I've read several books set in and around Zimbabwe -- mostly memoirs by Peter Godwin, Douglas Rogers, and Alexandra Fuller -- Any others that offer insights into country and its culture?

Thanks! So grateful for this forum.

Hi there!
I plan to travel from Harare to Great Zimbabwe.
As far as I know I have to go first to Masvingo. A bit weary because somewhere I read that the road is in bad condition. I am solo and without car. Any update and advice how to go from Harare to Masvingo/ How many hours (by pubic bus?).
Thanks for amy response

Hi, I figured it might be easiest to put my various questions in separate topics...! I'm thinking of renting a car for one day while in Bulawayo so I can explore the environs. Should I reserve a car in advance or can I just do it when I get to town? Any idea how much gas costs?

Thanks again....!!
