The swish Arcades Shopping Centre is easy to reach by minibus from along Cairo Rd or from the Millennium Bus Station, or by taxi (around ZK120). As well as banks, bookshops, internet cafés, furniture stores, restaurants and fast-food outlets, the shopping centre boasts a huge Spar supermarket.

    2 money exchanges, good food, a lot of activities

    On Sundays, there is a safe open market in the parking lot where you can buy most of the things you would find at other smaller cultural markets. Bring hair ties and pens to barter with. Also, talk them down in price; they like to haggle.

    There's a supermarket (Spar-exchange your money there if you can), an ATM, good restaurants (La Mimosa if you just need a bite, Rhapsody's if you want a more upscale meal and drinks), movies, a couple of clothing shops, an electronics shop (good in case you forgot your earbuds) and a music store.

    The taxis are blue and usually line up at the back of the parking lot. You can bargain them down, too, but have kwacha, they don't take credit cards.
