can anyone provide an update on how the civil war in Yemen has affected tourism/access to Socotra? I will be travelling to Oman in December and was thinking of tacking on a side-trip to Socotra, if it's possible to get to it from Muscat/Salalah.
Boat travel to Soqotra from Oman is now over until mid September at the earliest. There is still no definite news about when direct flights from Dubai will start. Currently there are flights to Sayuun in the Hadramawt but unfortunately no connecting flights.
Recently an American arrived on Soqotra without first getting a visa. this is a huge big no no. He was held by authorities and shipped off the island as soon as possible. Please make sure you get a visa. The best way is to contact a travel agency on the island. If they are legit they should be willing to send you the visa as an email attachment.
Hi, if you want to try travelling to Soqotra by boat try contacting the company below. I understand they can arrange passage to Soqotra for $150USD plus a financial gift to the captain of the boat. make sure you complete your trip before mid May as the monsoon weather makes travel by boat impassible.

be prepared for a 36 to 48 hour trip. possible longer if something…
Ok, as of 24th March 2016, here is the current situation.
If you are a westerner do not travel to Mainland Yemen at the moment. I have an Egyptian friend who just left Aden as it is too dangerous to live there at the moment. I know of one westerner living in Sana'a but he has a job and is well protected by local blokes who are his mates.
As of today the only flights to Soqotra are from Sayoon in the Hadramawt. This route is ok if you are from Yemen or Saudi but do not attempt this if you are…
I am sure many of you who have been to Sanaa during the 2000's have met Michael, a white guy from Australia who had been living in Yemen for many years. When I met him in 05, 06 and 07 on my three trips to Yemen, he was working at (or running?) a travel agency in Sanaa catering to small groups of western tourists. He also frequently hung out at Taj Talha hotel in the old quarters of Sanaa since he was good friends with the owner.
This is him: Image on Picload
Has anyone seen him or heard about…
I'm tentatively planning a trip to Aden to study Arabic and there doesn't seem to be a consolidated thread about traveling there to study arabic, so I wanted to start one.
I am planning on going next year, probably August. I just wanted to know if anybody had a name of a private teacher or suggestions for finding one once I get there.
I noticed some airlines are running flights to and from Yemen this summer and was planning on visiting Yemen during that time. If I went, it would be during a study abroad term in France, so I would fly from Paris through Cairo to Sana'a, most likely.
I understand things change rapidly in the Middle East, but do you think there's any chance Sana'a will be possible to visit this June? Also, I would be traveling solo. Thanks for your thoughts!
i m back from soqotra and i had a wonderful time there.
i did the trip with SOCOTRA-TREK.COM and my driver was Salem and the guide Mahdi!
They did a great job, all perfect organised and had a lot of fun on the island.
even the unrest on the mainland, socotra is far away and totally safe.
i know in autumn yemenia has direct flight from dubai again which is great!
for me its probably the most beautiful place i have ever been and i will ever be!
go for it!!!
