On the coast, early morning is my favourite time of day. As the sun wakes from its slumber in a fiery orange blaze there's nothing better than a beach stroll with just the local seagulls for company. If I'm staying in a B&B I'll head back for breakfast, and not just a bowl of cornflakes and a couple of bits of dry toast; the Welsh breakfast is an organic extravaganza including cured bacon, succulent sausages and regional specialities such as laverbread (bread made with seaweed). Fuelled for the day, I'll be itching to get those boots back on and hit the coast path proper. At 290km (179mi) there's plenty to choose from, and heaps of shorter sections that are good for a few hours. The section from Barafundle to St Govan's takes me from rich golden sands to a rocky cove complete with hidden chapel. Along the way, I'll stop to watch the climbers and abseilers scaling the sheer cliffs. Buzzy little St David's is Pembrokeshire's 'city'. London it ain't, but it's got a clutch of stylish cafes that are great for a spot of lunch. If I'm still firing on breakfast I might just grab a coffee or locally made ice cream. There's no great rush to move on, so that coffee usually becomes two (or three), before I make for the beach. Pembrokeshire has gorgeous sweeping sands where you can find decent surf, take a pony ride or just kick back and chill, but I love to explore. Among the hundreds of hidden coves are tiny scraps of secret sand just waiting to be discovered. And when I've found my own, I just want to sit and breathe it all in. Dinner is all about seafood, and fresh crab and lobster are treats not to be missed. If I'm lucky I can hang out with friends who have caught and smoked their own salmon - with a couple of beers under a fading sun, I can't imagine a more idyllic end to the day.
