Mérida is huge on annual festivals - the biggest is Feria del Sol, held over the week before Ash Wednesday. There's music, dancing, sports events, bullfights and - of course - a beauty pageant. The mountain towns around Mérida are also rich in festivities, most of which are linked to the religious calendar. You can expect every village to hold a celebratory feast on the day of its patron saint.
