A Top Day in Isla de Margarita

I get up early and eat breakfast at my beachside hotel's restaurant in El Yaque, admiring the beautiful sands and sports enthusiasts beyond. Soon I'll be joining them, so I go back to my room and suit up for my first kite-surfing lesson. El Yaque is also one of the world's premier spots for windsurfing, and a couple of important competitions take place each year. I enjoy the steady breeze and when I fall, the water is only 1m-1.5m (3ft-5ft) deep!

After I tire myself out, I clean up and hire a taxi for the day: First stop is El Valle del Espíritu Santo. Here I pay my respects to the Virgin and think about what a crazy scene it must be in September, when the village is packed with pilgrims (from all over Venezuela!) who come to honour her. After I'm done I point my taxi to Posada Restaurant Serrania, on a nearby mountaintop, for a late lunch. I take in the glorious view while lingering over my garlic shrimp. Soon it's time to leave, and I head to Playa El Agua, where I'm way too late for a snorkelling adventure to Los Frailes, an island chain nearby. But tomorrow is another day, and so I make a future reservation. Now I walk a bit on the wide, pretty beach, noting crowds of sunburned tourists and the craft vendors catering to them. It's a fun, busy scene, but it's time for me to go elsewhere.

My taxi takes me to Juangriego, where I greet the Dutch family at Hotel Patrick and have a drink at their bar. There are a few other travellers to chat with, and soon we have plans for dinner at nearby Playa Caribe. When the time comes, we head there (only 10 minutes' drive away) and plant ourselves at Club la Playya, where we feast on grilled fish and coconut water (still in the shell!). All the while watching the sun as it drops beneath the horizon under a fiery sky.
