You don't have to go too far to find hiking and biking opportunities either - the best option is Parque Nacional El Ávila, which has a teleférico (cable car) and over 200km (120mi) of trails.

Parque Nacional El Ávila, just north of the city, offers some of the best hiking infrastructure in the country, with over 200km (120mi) of signposted trails and numerous camping areas.

rock climbing
Parque de Recreación Cuevas del Indio is a favorite rock-climbing spot; local climbers flock here on the weekend. It's 9km (5.5mi) southeast of the city center on the southern continuation of Av Principal el Cafetal.

baseball
Béisbol (baseball) is the local sporting obsession. Professional-league games are played from October to February at the 25,000-seat Estadio Universitario (University Stadium).

soccer
Also at the university, Estadio Olímpico UCV (Olympic Stadium) hosts some of the Venezuela national team's home soccer matches (between December and March). The stadium was recently expanded to accommodate 40,000 people to host the Copa América in 2007.

racing
Caracas' excellent horse-racing track, Hipódromo La Rinconada, features racing on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The track is 6km (4mi) southwest of the center, off the Autopista del Valle.
