The variable climate in this region means that dry spells and downpours often occur without warning. That said, year-round temperatures are fairly moderate, so travelers needn't worry about freezing or frying. In the dry season (typically January through May), the falls fizzle out to mist. This is the best time of year to see the sight in a plane - boat trips, on the other hand, are slowly phased out because waterways are too shallow to navigate. If you go by boat at the beginning or the end of the dry season, expect a longer travel time because of the need for portage. In the rainy season, the falls' flow turns to a gushing shower, but it can be covered by mist and cloud.
Generally, climate patterns vary in this region - unseasonable droughts and unpredictable deluges can greatly affect the falls experience. However, the Gran Sabana's elevation is such that the region is pleasantly temperate, with average lows of 13°C (55°F) and average highs of 30°C (86°F). The dry season is roughly between January and May; at this time of year, the falls dump the least volume of water and rivers are at their lowest. Conversely, the rainy season provides visitors to the falls with a fine display of gushing water, especially in the very wet months of August and September. During this time, however, the area is often covered by a veil of mist and cloud, making it difficult to appreciate.
