Introducing Virginia Beach

Some people like to watch loud young men drink themselves louder; some like high culture; some want a nice place to tan the family. You get all of the above in Virginia’s largest city, which tries hard not to be just another hedonistic seaside escape.

I-264 runs straight into the visitor center (800-822-3224; www.vbfun.com; 2100 Parks Ave; 9am-5pm) and the beach. Surfing is permitted at the beach’s southern end near Rudee Inlet and alongside the 14th St pier.
