I get up and out of my hotel early enough to grab a cup of fresh-roasted fair trade coffee at the Quetzal Cafe and then pop into Sun Studio, down the block, for one of the early tours. As the guide lays out the musical history of Sun, I see how Elvis, Johnny Cash and Howlin' Wolf (to name just a few) got their starts. I groove to their jukin' music to get me going, and then I hop on the free Sun Studio shuttle to stop in to either Graceland for some shag-carpet worship or the Gibson Guitar Factory to soak up a little more musical history. I'd follow up by spending a couple of hours at the National Civil Rights Museum, thinking about the other King (Martin Luther, Jr.), and his legacy. I'd spend a little extra time in the exhibit on the alternative theories of his assassination, and then go take a breather, grabbing an excellent lunch at McEwen's. After a jaunt through Memphis' world-class zoo (pandas need love too!) and a late afternoon nap, I'd head back out to Rendezvous for their dry rubbed pork ribs: one of a kind. Night would send me into the neighborhoods and their gritty clubs to catch a show - perhaps the guitar-pickin' jam session at Kudzu's.
