Gambling Across the Continents

There's no doubting Las Vegas is a feast for the senses, but make sure you plan ahead so you don't leave feeling as if you haven't quite tasted enough. The distances between the city's major sights - the casino-hotel megaresorts - and the size of the properties are deceptively large and most visitors can only really take in a few in a day. This is a day-long walking tour (including a lunch break) during which you'll trot the globe in mostly air-conditioned comfort.

Start at Paris-Las Vegas, where you can take a trip up the Eiffel Tower and cruise by lovely bistros and shops. Take the monorail to the MGM Grand for its captivating lion habitat and glamorous casino. Pick up the pace at New York-New York, exploring its adrenaline-fuelled ESPN Zone and Coney Island Emporium gaming areas and an unforgettable roller-coaster. Hop on the tram to Mandalay Bay, basking on the sand-and-surf beach and visit the Shark Reef before taking a tram to the marvellous Egyptian-themed Luxor casino, which houses King Tut's Museum.

A Top Day in Las Vegas

Nobody's an early riser in Vegas. Shaking off the Rabelaisian fête of the night before, I get up just in time to make it into the breakfast buffet line, maybe at Le Village at Paris-Las Vegas, then take a free gambling lesson at one of the Strip's megaresort casinos. I laze away the desert afternoon by the hotel pool or at a primo spa like THEhotel's bathhouse. As the sun starts to sink, it's time to zoom up the Stratosphere tower for thrill rides and drinks at Romance Top of the World lounge. Scoring a dinner reservation at Rosemary's justifies a big detour before heading back to the Strip. Then I let the gaming begin, eventually winding up downtown, where I get into an Old Vegas mood by admiring the vintage signs of the Neonopolis and ducking into the back poker room at Binion's. After having the total Fremont Street Experience, I head out to a nightclub like Ice. After hours, I drop by a late-night coffee shop for a steak-and-eggs graveyard special before catching a little vampiric shut-eye back at my hotel. Why? Because at noon, it starts all over again.
