Introducing Jacksonville

Are we there yet? Have we left yet? It’s hard to tell, because Jacksonville sprawls out over a whopping 840 sq miles, making it the largest city by area in the continental US (eclipsed only by Anchorage, AK). It stretches its limbs along three meandering rivers – including the St Johns River, the only river in the world besides the Nile that flows south to north. Jacksonville Beach – known locally as ‘Jax Beach’ – is about 17 miles east of the city center and is where you’ll find white sand and most of the action. Information’s available from the convention & visitors bureau (800-733-2668; www.visitjacksonville.com).
