Pre-20th-Century History

Founded at the junction of two old Indian trails, Charlotte was described as a 'hornet's nest of rebellion' against British rule in the 1770s. Miners burrowed under the town in the early 1800s, and banks were founded to handle all the gold.

Recent History

Today, Charlotte is the second-largest US banking centre after New York: the hornet's nest turned hive. It's also a study and party town, with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte attracting students from all over the region.
