Montevideo's major tourist attraction is its beaches, so most visitors come in summer (December to February), with the majority being Argentines or Brazilians on vacation. The city's urban attractions are open year-round and the climate remains temperate and mild, even in winter. If you don't mind crowds, then planning a trip around Montevideo's Carnaval in late-February/early-March is a must. Uruguay's biggest party and most popular celebration takes place on the first Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Highlights include candombe dance troupes beating out African-influenced rhythms on large drums.
