Peddlers can hire a bike from the Albergue Juvenil and go cruising along the riverfront Rambla, a walking-jogging-bike track that leads to the city's eastern beaches. After about 2km (1.2mi) you'll get to Playa Pocitos, which is great for swimming and a game of beach volleyball.
One of Uruguay's favorite pastimes is dancing the tango. No trip to Montevideo would be complete without a night on the dance floor.
Further along from Playa Pocitos, you'll come to Playa Buceo. At the yacht club, you can get windsurfing lessons from Enrique Soriano.
Soccer is a local passion, Uruguay having hosted - and won - the first ever World Cup in 1930. Catch a game at Estadio Centenario, the city's main stadium, for an exhilarating, some say scary, sporting experience.
