No matter how often I visit Lviv, I always discover something I hadn't noticed before. And no matter how much I read about it, I get the deep sense that it holds countless secrets, elusive to any documentarian. With a seemingly endless network of narrow alleys, unique and intricate centuries-old buildings, and tiny charming restaurants, Lviv is a feast of material for writers and visual artists alike.
It's a city to be appreciated slowly and on foot, so I start my morning on the hunt for a new cafe, preferably one with outdoor seating so I can study passers-by. Then it's off to explore some more.
As I walk through the streets, I search for interesting details in the sooty old buildings. If it's spring or summer, I'll stroll through the flower market at ploshcha Soborna, smiling at how the simple beauty of a blossom seems to be so much appreciated and in demand here. I linger and browse at the second-hand book market in front of the Royal Arsenal, fingering the worn bindings and yellowed pages.
My legs are starting to tire, so I enter one of Lviv's cathedrals, sit at a pew, lean back, and let my eyes do the walking over the ceiling fresco and myriad images of the iconostasis, until my energy is back up.
Before the sun sets, I board tram No 7 and lulled by its gentle rocking, alight to find mysterious tombstones to photograph in the messy beauty of Lykachivsky Cemetery.
