Aside from a small but increasing number of accommodation options on Funafuti Atoll and one guesthouse on Vaitupu, there is little in the way of places to stay across Tuvalu. Wherever there are people, however, you'll probably find someone who will offer a roof and a meal at a reasonable price. There is one hotel, the government-owned Vaiaku Lagi , which overlooks the beautiful Funafuti Lagoon on Funafuti. For US$45 you will get a room with lagoon views and a hot shower. A few guesthouses also operate, providing simple accommodation and meals for about half the price of the hotel. Restaurants are virtually non-existent. Unless you're in the middle of the main village on Funafuti, meals are only available at accommodation venues. Island-hopping within Tuvalu can get expensive unless you own a yacht, in which case, damn the expense, full speed ahead. Those on slightly more humble budgets could get by on Funafuti with cheap food and simple accomodation for about US$35 a day. Bicycle hire might raise this a dollar or two. There is no car hire facility.
Arrive with Australian dollars in cash, or change travellers cheques at the bank. Don't be surprised if your credit cards aren't accepted. There is a pick-up service offered by the hotel for guests, as well as a few taxis doing the run into town. When you're leaving Tuvalu, there is a A$20 departure tax.
Tipping is not expected, so for the sake of future travellers, don't do it unless service is extraordinary.
