A Top Day in Ko Phi Phi

I'll roll out of bed at sunrise and stroll to the beach at Ao Lo Dalam, amazed again at the gorgeous views in all directions. Dawn light on the limestone-sugarloaf outcrops in the bay is fantastic and the water is still as glass; I'll swim out to the yellow flag - it warns boats away from the coral rock underneath - and check out the few colourful fish that hang around there, then spend a while floating in the quiet, looking up to the early birds of prey hovering above the bay. Breakfast, of course, from the food stalls between the pier and the beach if I feel local, or the full works in town if only bacon and eggs will do. Strength restored, I'll cruise the waterfront and chat with the boat taxi guys. Depending on the weather and their recommendation, I'll hire a long-tail, snorkelling gear included, for three hours or so around the coast. Around lunchtime I'll ask to be dropped somewhere along the Long Beach strip - probably at Viking Place - to relax in the style and vibe of the private beachfront restaurant, and schedule a snooze under the palm trees before stirring myself mid-afternoon to walk back into town along the waterfront. I'll check out the goods on offer and maybe book a massage for the following morning - my legs will need it after climbing the steep jungle pathway to the town viewpoint in time for sunset drinks and photo-ops over both beaches. After such a full day, I'll probably opt for a low-key dinner and a movie (The Beach, has to be!), rather than late night bar hopping. Then again, hot, steamy nights were made for partying…
