Ban Bang Bao, a village on the prettiest harbour on Ko Chang, is the perfect place to start the day with a cup of coffee and a steaming bowl of khao tom plaa (rice soup with fresh fish) from one of the dockside restaurants. After breakfast I'm ready to grab snorkel and fins and hop a speedboat bound for nearby 16-sq-km (6.2 sq mi) Ko Mak. From Ko Mak's long and sandy Ao Suan Yai I'll take a leisurely swim across to the nearby islet of Ko Kham to snorkel the pristine coral reefs there. During low tide one can walk the distance across a sand spit. It's back to Ao Suan Yai for a fresh seafood lunch at one of the rustic restaurants on the beach before boarding an early afternoon boat back to Ban Bang Bao. Next I'm off to Ban Salak Khok in time to meet an old friend for sunset, the best time to slip into one of the traditional Ko Chang rowboats for a quiet mangrove cruise. With a local villager manning the oars, we'll share a bottle of wine while digging into fresh crab and rock lobster, fireflies winking over the still waters.
