The winter season in Alpine resorts kicks off in mid-December and moves into full swing around Christmas, closing down again when the snow begins to melt around mid-April. June is the earliest month to go hiking in the Alps, and many places shut down for a few weeks before the beginning of the winter season.
Spring is a beautiful time of year to explore the flowering countryside. Summer lasts roughly from June to September and offers the most pleasant climate for outdoor pursuits (apart from winter sports, of course). Autumn brings the most lovely coloured leaves.
Lucerne's peak period is July and August, when prices are high, accommodation often full and the sights packed. You'll find fewer crowds in the shoulder seasons either side of summer (April, May and October).
Mountains make their own weather and Central Switzerland is no exception to this adage. At any time of the year you'll need to be prepared for a range of temperatures. However, at only 430m (1410ft), Lucerne is a temperate clime, with moderately cold winters bringing patchy snow. June to August are the hottest months with temperatures climbing above 25°C (77°F). Unfortunately, summer also brings the highest rainfall. Mid-August to late October generally has fairly settled weather, and is a good period for hiking and outdoor activities without the crowds. Look out for the Föhn, a hot, dry southerly wind which blows from the Mediterranean. It sweeps down into the valleys and can be oppressively uncomfortable, with thunderstorms often following. It can strike at any time of the year, but especially in spring and autumn. Skiers and hikers should always be prepared for very cold and wet weather at altitude.
