Two words: winter sports. Lucerners are the Conquerors of the Slopes. Water sports are big in summer, and for the wild at heart there's rafting, canyoning and even zorbing. Horse racing, jumping contests and yodelling shows are also popular.
There's supervised swimming at the Strandbad Lido (tel:041 370 38 06) near Camping Lido, or you can swim for free on the other bank of the lake by Seepark, off Alpenquai.
North of town is the Rotsee lake, site of international rowing regattas. SNG (www.sng.ch), on the northern side of Seebrücke, rents out boats and pedalos, and offers lake cruises. Lake Lucerne Navigation Company SGV (www.lakelucerne.ch in German) operates boats to Alpnachstad, Weggis, Vitznau and more.

A popular 3.5km walking tour (1.5hr) starts at Kapellbrücke and finishs at Rathausquai. Cross the Kapellbrücke from the south to the north bank then double back along Rathaussteg bridge to the Jesuitenkirche, the oldest baroque church in Switzerland. Continue west past the Nadelwehr (or water spikes). Cross the Spreuerbrücke to Mühleplatz then veer right into Weinmarkt. Follow Weggisgasse to the intersection with Mariahilfgasse and turn left up the hill. At the top, follow the stairs through the park to the Museggmauer. Continue down Museggstrasse, passing underneath an arch in the city wall and continuing on to Museumsplatz. Turn left until you come to the Bourbaki Panorama and Löwenplatz. Make your way back along Schweizerhofquai to Rathausquai, enjoying the waterfront.
